As a woman growing up in Catholic Ireland, the prospect of expressing my female sexuality in any form was greatly disapproved of, if not overtly, then certainly subconsciously. There was an unspoken part of me that feared being perceived as overly ‘anything’ with regards my female self.
My old bull$h*t beliefs were compounded when I entered the workforce. A male dominated corporate landscape where the need to hide my ‘feminine’ self was magnified. I didn’t want to be viewed as anything but utterly professional, and so I became accustomed to dimming my feminine light to desperately avoid any unwanted attention
It was conflicting self advice – “Be yourself, but just not all of yourself!!”.
Dancing to liberation
I realised that by allowing this shadow to hang over a core part of my being, I could never truly feel liberated in my own skin. I would never fully embrace my own personal power, which I knew lived within me, as it does within all of us.
Then Magic happened.
While attending a Tony Robbin’s event in The Netherlands, I was introduced to 5 Rhythms dancing. It was transformational. No exaggeration.
“5Rhythms transcends dance. The movement is the medicine, the meditation and the metaphor. Together we peel back layers, lay masks down, and dance till we disappear…Only to rediscover ourselves through it all.” – Gabrielle Roth
The music started and my body instantly awoke. The moods of music came in waves, journeying from gentle peaceful fluidity, to chaotic sharpness, to unleashing ancestral warrior, and to sensual stillness.
It was exhilarating, yet peaceful and liberating.
Moving around like a perfect symphony, independently, then as one, sensual and connected, free and safe. Something fundamental shifted within the core of my being. Dancing intimately, from a place of mutual understanding and love, without expectation. It broke through my past blocks and empowered me to step into my feminine energy. I felt free to embody all of my female self without fear of repercussion.
There is nothing more powerful than unleashing all that you are and deserve to be. It lies there within you, it is your job to release it.
The impact was instantaneous and remarked upon by my dear friends. That subtle, unspoken shift, that changed it all. It has since allowed me to show up more fully in all of my relationships. I believe it is only when we truly fall in love with our real selves, that we can offer the gift to others.
I hope this inspires you to find your ‘dance’ that ignites whatever may lie dormant within you. I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences, so please leave a comment below.
