What is in a word?
So often we throw our words around without deep thinking of the impact behind them. We use them to fill up awkward silences, to judge ourselves to or unwind in a rant about our day. Our words can also deliver our passion, our love, our excitement. Words are boundless in their pursuits.
But what is in a word?
A dear friend gifted me ‘The Four Agreements’ – a small book claiming to be a practical guide to personal freedom. I am a spiritualist at heart so was naturally curious as to what lessons I would uncover.
What I was not expecting was the simplicity of my first lesson,’Be impeccable with your word’. I was surprised when the author explained “with just this first agreement you will be able to transcend to the level of existence i call heaven on earth”. Quite the statement to make. I thought. I was immediately intrigued.
While this first agreement sounds very simple, it is very powerful, the author goes on to explain.
“Your word is the power that you have to create” – Don Miguel Ruiz
Our words are a vocal reflection of our thoughts, feelings and dreams. Ruiz goes on to say that this power is a double edged sword, used wisely and it can create heaven on earth, but it’s misuse can lead to a living hell.
Most interestingly is the insight into how we misuse our words so wrongfully against ourselves. I agree. I have said the worst words to myself than any other person in my life. What love or beauty can be created from that?
I would challenge you this week to become more observant of your words you use with others, but most importantly, with yourself. See what shift this creates within you.
I would love to hear what you think so please come back and leave a comment!
